Quince Varietals

Aromatnaja 

(W4, C18 planted 2003) Among the best varieties from the Black Sea region. It is very productive of medium size fruit ripe in October. The fruit is sweet enough to eat fresh but the texture is woody like other quinces. 

Karp’s Sweet 

(W2, J6 planted (2019) David Karp introduced this very sweet quince that was first introduced in Peru then brought by Edgar Valdivia to California. We had heard stories from the California Rare Fruit Growers that this variety had fruit so sweet you could eat it fresh off the tree. In our region is still has the woody quince texture but an excellent sweet flavor. 

Claribel 

(W2, J6 planted 2025) An open pollinated seedling from the Russian Vavilov Institute. It is productive with large fruit and it resists cracking and fungus diseases. 

Havran 

(W2, H6 planted 2025) A traditional Turkish variety from the Izmir station with very large pear shaped fruit. It ripens in September and has white flesh. We got it from Quince researcher Elwood Fisher. 

Ekmek 

(W2, I6 planted 2025) It regularly produces large crops of medium size yellow fruit with creamy yellow flesh. The most popular quince in western Turkey. 

Limon 

(W4, C17 branch on a trellised quince tree) A turkish cultivar with a lemon fragrance. Tart fruit ripens in late September.

Portugal 

(W4, C 17 branch on a trellised quince tree) A large pear shaped old European variety, large in the middle and tapered at both ends. It turns a deep crimson when cooked. It has a delicious pineapple-like flavor. 

Seker Gevrik 

(W4, C 17 branch on a trellised quince tree) A large yellow pear shaped sweet fleshed quince from Turkey ripe in October. 

Smyrna 

(W2, G6 planted 2025) Brought to our country from Turkey about 1890. It is a large yellow pear shaped fruit with a mild delicious flavor.
